Text

The design of the following pages is to facilitate the knowledge of man by a physical analysis of the passions, shewing their rise, relation, and tendency; that when you perceive a person possess such a passion, you may expect such another along with it, and so gain an insight into the character. Thus a fearful man is often suspicious, cold-hearted, and sometimes covetous. But as these inferences are not invariable, and as the varieties of human fate include circumstances which operate against natural propensities, the use of such analogies is rather to shew what was natural than what is habitual.
