Title

'The Gin Shop' from George Cruikshank's Scraps and Sketches

Subject

Alcohol, Satire

Description

Depicting a gin-shop of the time, this image shows a drunk stumbling against the counter next to his inebriated children, and a mother force-feeding her baby gin instead of milk. In a characteristic Cruikshank visualization of a pun, they stand in a gin-trap. The apparently fair young lady serving them is in fact a skeleton holding a mask.
